8 December, 2015: Perth shoppers will enjoy the flexibility of more festive shopping hours for the second time ever, with extended hours from today until Christmas Day, according to the Australian Retailers Association (ARA).

From today, major Perth retailers will be able to open from 7am on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 8am on Sundays, while on weekends, stores will be allowed to trade until 6pm.

Figures by the ARA and Roy Morgan Research indicate Australian shoppers will spend $46.8 billion in retail stores over the Christmas trading period from November 15 to December 24, 2015, with Western Australia to account for $5.4 billion of this, up 2.7 percent on Christmas last year.

Perth shoppers are expected to take full advantage of the extra hours available in the lead up to Christmas to stock up on products including Christmas gifts, decorations, and groceries for the festive season, ARA executive director, Russell Zimmerman said.

“This is the second year Perth shoppers have been able to hit the stores at times outside the normally designated trading hours,” said Mr Zimmerman.

“The extension of hours is reflective of the new 24/7 global economy we now live in, with consumers able to jump online and purchase at any hour of the day or night they desire. Physical retail stores are also cashing in on this convenience, which for both consumers and retailers alike, is a real bonus during the busy Christmas period.”

In addition, Perth CBD retailers will be able to trade longer tonight, Tuesday December 8, to take advantage of extra crowds expected in the CBD precinct as a result of the annual Christmas Pageant. City of Perth retailers are permitted extra trade between 6pm and 9pm tonight.

“Perth CBD retailers will have the unique opportunity to cash in on extra foot traffic in the city for tonight’s Christmas Pageant, and we expect quite a few of these visitors to tick off some items on their Christmas shopping lists at the same time,” Mr Zimmerman said.

“With an extra 51 hours available to Perth consumers to fit in their shopping this year, and retailers and shopping centres already seeing a boost in patronage this week, Western Australia is on track to meet our prediction of 2.7 percent spending growth this Christmas.”
